Voice changes that need an ENT consultation
By Dr. Tejasvi Vemuru — Consultant ENT Surgeon
Most hoarseness is harmless. A cold, an off-key shouting match, a smoky restaurant — these will clear within a week or two without any treatment beyond rest and fluids.
What's worth seeing an ENT consultant about is hoarseness that lasts more than two to three weeks, especially if you smoke, drink heavily, or use your voice professionally (teachers, singers, call-centre workers).
Other warning signs: a feeling of something stuck in the throat that doesn't go away, painful swallowing, ear pain on one side, or a persistent cough alongside voice change.
A consultation usually takes 20-30 minutes. We'll look at your vocal cords with a small flexible scope (much more comfortable than it sounds) and figure out whether it's something simple like reflux or vocal-cord nodules, or something that needs further investigation.
